Today we had three special visitors. We had Melanie and two feathered friends from the Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre come to visit us. Melanie read us a book called Otis's Story. It was a non-fiction story about an owl that had been injured in Medicine Hat, Alberta and had to be rehabilitated. After the story we met Kealy and Nara. Nara is a small burrowing owl and Kealy is an American kestrel. We loved our visit and learned so much. We have even included the link to the Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre on our blog. We are hoping to find out how we can help.
Words from the students.....
We found out that there are only six burrowing owls in Manitoba. By Maya
We learned that you can tell what time of day and owl hunts by looking at the colour of their eyes. If an owl has yellow eyes it hunts during the day. If an owl has dark brown eyes it hunts at night. By Drew
The American kestrel is stronger than the burrowing owl and they need to be separated when they are at the center. By Jerzey
We found out that Kealy has heat vision. She can see her prey in ultra violet light.
